This bill would grant statehood to Washington, D.C.

This bill would create the state of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth out of most of the territory of the District of Columbia - making it the 51st state in the United States.

Would not include monuments and government buildings

The new state would consist of what mostly is residential and commercial area of Washington, D.C.

The 2-square-mile area consisting of federal buildings and monuments would be excluded from the new state. This area would be called the Capital, and would be the seat of the national government.

Residents would elect one representative and two senators to represent them in Congress.
