Appeals Court rules on sexual orientation discrimination
This ruling by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals states that sexual orientation is not covered under "sex" as a protection in the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Bostock fired for sexual orientation
Gerald Bostock was a child welfare services coordinator in Clayton County, Georgia. He claimed he was fired for being gay.
He sued on the grounds that discrimination based on sexual orientation is prohibited by the Civil Rights Act.
Circuit Court: Sexual orientation not protected
The Eleventh Circuit Court ruled against Bostock.
It affirmed that Bostock was discriminated against based on his sexual orientation and gender stereotyping.
However, it ruled that "[d]ischarge for homosexuality is not prohibited by Title VII."
