Why is Lobby99 interested in this?

Ever since Lobby99 began, we have been looking for a health policy that would meet the following criteria...

o Any U.S. citizen would be able to receive quality medical, dental, vision, and mental health care at a cost they could easily afford.

o Providers would be compensated reasonably and promptly.

o The plan would be economically sustainable - completely paid for by public dollars with no borrowing.

o The money to pay for the plan would be received using a formula that is equitable for all income levels.

o Most Americans would pay no more (and most likely less) than they now are paying for their health care.

How does the American Health Security Act compare to previous and current policies?

Before the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare)...

o Tens of millions of citizens could not afford health care

o Insurance companies could refuse to insure anyone with a preexisting condition

o An insurance company could cancel a policy if the insured person became seriously ill. This practice was known as recision.

o Many insurance policies offered little protection, due to a high deductible or annual and lifetime limits to what an insurance company would pay.

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare)...

o Although many more people were able to obtain insurance - especially those with preexisting conditions - tens of millions of citizens remained uninsured. This was not the intent of the plan, but the June 2012 Supreme Court ruling that ruled it constitutional to require Americans to have insurance coverage also ruled that the federal government could not force states to expand their Medicaid programs, resulting in millions of people who earn too little to qualify for subsidies yet too much to qualify for their state's Medicaid program.

o The cost of health coverage for many people decreased. However, this was due mostly to the cost being subsidized by federal money - effectively giving tax dollars to insurance companies.

o Insurance companies can reduce their network of providers, making it more difficult to obtain covered care.

With a single-payer system...

o Every American would receive the health care they need, including preventive care and prescription drugs

o You would have a much broader choice of providers

o You likely would pay significantly less for health care than you currently do.
