What is the status of Unemployment Compensation?
Since December 2012, nobody is eligible for more than 6 months of unemployment compensation.
The House of Representatives and the Senate would need to introduce and pass legislation to extend benefits beyond that.
What did the previous Congress do?
The 113th Congress considered two bills that would have extended benefits for an additional 5 months.
President Barack Obama had indicated he would sign the HR-3979 had the House of Representatives approved it. However, House Speaker John Boehner did not allow the bill to be voted on.
Both bills effectively died when the term of the 113th Congress ended Jan 2, 2015.
